Whether you are a K-12 or college student, you may be eligible for additional support at school. Typically, support provided within the school setting requires an official diagnosis from a psychologist or therapist.
Testing sessions are separated in to 2-3 separate sessions, depending on your child/teens needs. If you or your student has a limited attention span, he/she may require 3 to 4 sessions for testing. Each session takes roughly 2.5 hours, with one to two small breaks provided (as needed) during that time.
For both the ADHD and Learning Style Inventory Testing, you will receive your child’s test results within 30 days of the last testing session. At the last testing session, we will schedule the follow up diagnostic review meeting to explain what all the results mean and answer questions you may have. No waiting two to three months for your results!
Once testing is completed and you receive your comprehensive written report, I encourage you to share this information with your child’s school! In my experience working in schools, there is a 30 day waiting period from the time that you give the school the assessment report before they need to respond with next steps about your child. From there, they may accept the testing results and schedule a meeting to outline school based supports for your child. The learning inventory assessment does not automatically guarantee access to supports at school.
In short, yes! Supports for K-12 students are different from supports when you are a college student. In college, if your test results indicate you have a learning disability or an attention disorder, you can get supports such as testing accommodations, extended time, or a someone to help with taking notes during lectures.
Based on the results from the individual testing, rating scales, and clinical interview, if you or your child presents with symptoms associated with a diagnosis of ADHD or a learning disability, it will be outlined in the “diagnostic impressions” in the written report.
Every student with challenges does not necessarily have a learning disability or attention disorder. We use the DSM-5 when diagnosing learning, attention, or mental/behavioral health disorders.
